Discipleship: Terms Related to and Unrelated to "Discipleship" in the New Testament |
A compendium of verses showing terms related to and unrelated to discipleship in the New Testament. Within the English language the terms disciple and discipleship are cognates with the term discipline--along with its various definitions. Hence, discipleship has been commonly associated with ideas such as "to discipline oneself," "to be disciplined (corrected/rebuked) by another," "to practice the spiritual disciplines." Within the New Testament there are five terms translated with the English word "discipline" which have been often connected directly with discipleship. However, within the Greek language there is no such direct association because they are not cognates. While these terms certainly have a place within the Christian's life, they are not directly associated with discipleship. The term that is a cognate with the Greek term "disciple" within the the New Testament is the verb form: "to learn." One of the central texts to understanding discipleship then is Matthew 11:28-30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (RSV) I suspect it will be extremely difficult for us as English speaking people to disassociate the unrelated terms both because of the shared cognates, but also because these ideas have been cemented into our minds as being central to discipleship. We have turned disicpleship into a matter of religious practice; Jesus called to those burned out by the heavy demands of religious practice to come to Him to find rest and to learn from him as a gentle and humble teacher whose yoke is easy and whose burden is light! |
